Different types of compteur d'eau covers use different fastening methods, so the removal procedures also vary. Common types include:
- Pry-off / Lift-off Water Meter Cover
- Pentagon Nut Lock Water Meter Cover
- Key-lock Water Meter Cover
- Hinged Water Meter Cover
If the water meter cover cannot be opened due to dirt, corrosion, freezing, or other external factors, refer to the “Stuck Water Meter Cover” section at the end for troubleshooting.
Safety Precautions Before Removing a Water Meter Cover
① Avoid using destructive opening methods
Do not use destructive methods such as heating with an open flame, striking the cover with a sledgehammer, or cutting with acetylene, as these may damage the water meter or pipes or create safety hazards.
② Be mindful of connecting wires and remote reading modules (AMI/AMR modules)
If the water meter cover is connected to electrical wires, an antenna, or a remote reading module (AMI/AMR module), do not pull forcefully on the cover when opening it. Lift it slowly and place the cover in a position where it will not pull on the wires, to avoid damaging the communication components.
③ Do not force the cover open if it cannot be opened
If the cover shows obvious damage or severe rust, or if it still cannot be opened after reasonable cleaning, lubrication, and assisted opening, it is recommended to contact the water utility or a professional plumber for assistance to avoid causing further damage by forcing it open.
The following sections describe the opening methods for each type of water meter cover.
1. Pry-off / Lift-off Water Meter Cover Removal Method
Pry-off / lift-off water meter covers are among the most common types. It is removed by disengaging the cover’s fastening mechanism and lifting it upward to remove the cover from the water meter box frame. Depending on the fastening mechanism, this type of cover may use friction-fit connections, snap-fit clips, spring-loaded latches, or other auxiliary locking methods.
Typically, a one-piece flat cover is used, where the cover is mounted directly onto the water meter box frame and remains closed due to its own weight, a friction fitting, or a locking mechanism.
Depending on the specific design, the cover may feature: a lift hole, a pry slot, a spring-loaded locking mechanism, a snap-fit mechanism, or an edge opening gap.
Tools Required: Water meter lid hook, pry bar (with rubber or wooden block), flat-head screwdriver
Steps:
① Depending on the cover design, locate the lift hole, pry slot, or gap between the cover and the frame.
② Insert the water meter lid hook, pry bar, or screwdriver into the opening position
③ For water meter covers with snap-fit or spring-loaded locking mechanisms, insert a screwdriver or specialized tool into the operating position and push the internal latch or spring mechanism to release the cover.
④ For standard lift-off covers, insert a water meter lid hook or pry bar into the gap along the edge of the cover. If necessary, place a wooden block or rubber pad under the tool to protect the cover and the ground.
⑤ Slowly apply upward force to disengage one side of the cover from the frame first, then gradually widen the opening gap to remove the entire cover.
Note: In situations where the ground or cover needs protection, place a wooden block or rubber pad under the tool.
2. Pentagon Nut Lock Water Meter Cover Removal Method
Pentagon Nut Lock water meter covers are secured with pentagon-shaped nuts that cannot be operated with a standard wrench; they are primarily used to enhance theft resistance and prevent unauthorized opening.
Tools Required: Special pentagon key, pentagon socket wrench
Steps:
① Confirm that the lock hole is a pentagonal nut.
② Align and insert the special pentagon key or special socket tool into the lock hole.
③ Turn counterclockwise to unlock (some designs require turning clockwise; test the rotation first to determine the direction)
④ Once you hear a “click” or feel the resistance disappear, the cover is unlocked
⑤ After releasing the locking mechanism, proceed with the normal cover removal procedure.
Note: If the tool cannot turn, do not force it. Check whether the tool size matches or if the nut is corroded.
3. Key-Lock Water Meter Cover Opening Method
Key-lock water meter covers feature a built-in mechanical lock cylinder. They can only be opened by inserting the corresponding key into the keyhole and turning it to unlock the mechanism. These are commonly found in outdoor anti-theft meter boxes and centralized meter installations.
Tools Required: The corresponding key, a spare key, or replacement key
Steps:
① Locate the keyhole on the water meter cover and insert the corresponding key into the keyhole.
② Turn the key to the unlocked position (usually a 90° clockwise turn).
③ When you hear the latch retract, the cover is unlocked.
④ Pull or lift the cover open.
Note: If the key is lost, do not attempt to force the cover open. Contact the property management or water utility for assistance.
4. Hinged Water Meter Cover Removal Method
Hinged water meter covers are connected to the base via hinges; the cover can be flipped open upward without falling off. Some models feature latches or clips for additional locking.
Tools Required: Usually no tools required (manual operation); a screwdriver or pry bar (to release latches or assist with opening)
Steps:
① Check the cover for any locking mechanisms (latches, pins, or clips).
② If there are latches or clips, refer to Method 1 to release the locking mechanism first.
③ Grasp the edge of the cover or the handle, and flip it upward along the hinge to open it.
④ The hinge structure will keep the cover connected to the base and support it in the open position.
Note: If the hinge is rusted or seized due to prolonged exposure, spray a lubricant such as WD-40 onto the hinge connection. Allow it to penetrate, then operate the hinge slowly to avoid damaging it by forcing it open.
5. How to Deal with a Stuck Water Meter Cover
Water meter covers are constantly exposed to the elements and may become stuck due to dirt, rust, freezing, or prolonged disuse. When addressing this issue, start with simple, safe methods to gradually loosen the cover, taking care not to damage the cover, the water meter, or any internal components.
Common Tools Required:
- Rust remover/penetrant (e.g., WD‑40)
- Rubber Mallet
- Brush / Screwdriver
- Pry Bar
- Optionally warm water or a hairdryer for frozen lids
| Method | Operation |
| Remove Debris | Clean dirt, gravel, grass roots, and ice around the cover edge to ensure the opening area is clear. |
| Apply Lubricant | Spray penetrating oil such as WD-40 around seams, locking points, or bolts, and allow 5–10 minutes for it to penetrate. |
| Tap to Loosen | Gently tap around the cover edge with a rubber mallet to help loosen rust, sediment, and stuck areas. |
| Remove Ice Build-up | For frozen covers, use warm water or a hair dryer to melt ice around the edges; avoid excessive heat that may deform plastic covers. |
| Pry Carefully | Insert a pry bar into the gap between the cover and frame, use a protective pad if needed, and apply force gradually from multiple positions. |
| Repeat the Process | Repeat cleaning, lubrication, tapping, and prying as needed; avoid forcing the cover open with excessive force. |
