When buying residential water meters, the water meter size usually refers to the diameter of the water meter, that is, the nominal diameter of the water pipes in and out of the water meter. The nominal diameter is also called the average outer diameter.

This term is used to identify the size of pipe fittings in the piping system. It is a standardized standard diameter. It is neither the inner diameter nor the outer diameter, but the midpoint between the inner diameter and the outer diameter. This standard diameter is used for the convenience of design, manufacturing and maintenance, and is the specification name of the pipe.

In the naming of residential water meter models, the number immediately following “DN” indicates the specific nominal diameter size of the water meter. For example, DN20 means that the nominal diameter of the water meter is 20 mm, and DN50 means that the nominal diameter of the water meter is 50 mm. This determines that the water meter can be normally installed on the corresponding size of the pipe.

Typical water meter size for residential use are: 5/8 inch (15 mm), 3/4 inch (20 mm), 1 inch (25 mm).

Among them, 5/8 inch and 3/4 inch residential water meters are the most common and are widely used in residential areas such as homes and apartment buildings. 1-inch and 2-inch residential water meters are suitable for larger homes or those with higher water demands.

Factors Influencing Water Meter Size for Residential Use

There are two main factors that affect the residential water meter size: the size of the water pipe and the flow rate of water used. These two factors are considered differently in different situations.

Situation 1: Project design phase

Before construction, project designers need to determine the size of water pipes and residential water meters based on the estimated water consumption.

Designers can analyze the expected usage patterns based on the building type, the total number of water-using equipment and devices, the peak flow range, etc. to accurately predict water demand.

For domestic water supply systems, if the water consumption is uniform, the common flow of the water meter should be selected based on the water supply design flow; if the water consumption is uneven, the overload flow of the water meter should be selected based on the water supply design flow. In addition, the total peak demand of the water meter should not exceed the maximum instantaneous flow specified by the manufacturer.

The size of the water pipe is usually determined based on the above-derived flow. In addition, the diameter of the water pipe must accommodate the peak flow to prevent pressure drop and ensure efficient delivery.

After the water pipe size is determined, the residential water meter size is also determined. For example, a DN150 water pipe requires a DN150 caliber water meter. The water-using equipment’s design flow rate determines the water pipe’s size.

Situation 2: Renovation of existing facilities

When renovating existing facilities, such as installing water meters by room in individual households, or installing or renovating water meters in commercial residences, we only need to determine the size of the water pipe and then choose a water meter of the corresponding size based on the size of the water pipe.

How to Measure the Size of Household Water Meter?

The size of many residential water meters is marked directly below the dial or on the meter itself. Look for markings such as 5/8″, 3/4″, 1” or DN15 (15mm), DN20 (20mm), DN25 (25mm), which are common residential water meter sizes.

If you can’t find any size markings, you can estimate by measuring the pipe connected to the meter. Usually, the size of the meter is one size smaller than the pipe it is connected to.

How to Measure the Size of Water Pipes?

If you don’t have a tool specifically for measuring the size of water pipes, we can use a rope to measure the size of the pipe. The length of the rope should be slightly larger than the circumference of the pipe to ensure that it can completely surround the pipe. The specific steps are as follows:

1. Wrap the rope tightly around the pipe, making sure that the rope fits the surface of the pipe completely to avoid looseness or twisting.

After completing the loop, mark the start and end points of the rope.

Use a tape measure or other measuring tool to measure the distance from the start to the end point, which is the circumference of the pipe.

2. The diameter of the pipe can be calculated using the formula d=C/π. Where C is the circumference, π is the ratio of pi (approximately equal to 3.14), and d is the diameter.

Substitute the measured circumference value into the formula to solve for the diameter d. Compare it to standard pipe sizes (such as ½”, ¾”, 1”, etc.) to determine the appropriate residential water meter size.

Consequences of Choosing the Wrong Water Meter Size for Residential Use

Choosing the wrong residential water meter size has the following consequences:

Improperly choosing the size of a residential water meter can lead to inaccurate metering, which can affect the calculation of water bills.

If a residential water meter is oversized or undersized, it may result in frequent repairs or replacements, adding additional costs.

Inappropriate residential water meter size may result in reduced revenue for water service providers because inaccurate metering affects their understanding of water usage.
